Amiodarone

Amiodarone is a class III antiarrhythmic agent used to correct abnormal heart rhythms. It prolongs myocardial cell action potential duration and refractory period. Due to its potential for serious toxicities, including pulmonary toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and proarrhythmic effects, it is strictly reserved for patients with life-threatening arrhythmias.

Dosage by Body Weight

Initiated in a hospital setting. Adults typically start with a loading dose of 800 to 1600 mg daily in divided doses, tapered down to a maintenance dose of 200 to 400 mg daily. Pediatric doses are highly individualized and must be managed by a pediatric cardiologist.
